A young boy's snowman comes to life and a young girl is whisked away by a polar bear for a starry Christmas Eve bear-ride. Howard Blake's The Snowman and The Bear are concert adaptations of Raymond Briggs' captivating storybooks, based on music from the popular award-winning TVC/Channel 4 (UK) animated films. "A major discovery is Jörg Waschinski, a genuine male soprano." BBC Music Magazine (1999)

Jörg Waschinski's extraordinary vocal ability has led him to the presumably lost repertoire of the legendary Baroque castrati. Born in Berlin, he gained international recognition after becoming a prize-winner at the Johann Heinrich Schmelzer competition in Melk, Austria. In 1999 the renowned German opera magazine Opernwelt named him best young singer of the year and the Bonn Opera voted him as the best singer of their 2000/2001 season. His numerous stage roles include Xerxes in Handel's Xerxes at the Town Theatre Sankt Gallen and Nerone in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the State Opera Hanover. His numerous recordings include Johann Christian Bach's Endimione directed by Bruno Weil which won the 2000 ECHO Klassik Prize. Jörg Waschinski's performance with the CCOHK promises to delight with a rare selection of opera arias from the golden age of the castrati. The programme also includes chamber music by Handel and Haydn's joyous "Alelluja" Symphony.

    Glass Company
Samson Young New Commission for Strings, Live Electronics and Video
Haydn Symphony No. 96 in D major, "Miracle"

"Its tones are incomparably sweet beyond those of any other." Benjamin Franklin (1762)

In 1761 Benjamin Franklin invented the glass harmonica, an instrument which became one of the most celebrated instruments of the eighteenth century. Its ethereal qualities captivated composers such as Mozart and Donizetti to write compositions for it while the notorious Dr. Franz Mesmer used it to hypnotize his patients. By the mid -1800's the glass harmonica fell into obscurity as its sound was believed to cause the onset of madness. Thomas Bloch from France is a pioneer in the revival of glass harmonica playing today. He has given over 2,500 performances in 40 countries with artists such as Radiohead, John Cage, Gorillaz, Damon Albarn and Marianne Faithfull. His numerous recordings include one made for Miloš Forman's film Amadeus. Thomas Bloch's fascinating programme with the CCOHK will include glass music by Mozart and Franklin, a new commission by Samson Young and rumors of a falling chandelier in Haydn's "Miracle" Symphony…
