Mike
Chau began violin lessons at the age of five and started the viola
at the age of seven. He began his formal music training at the Music Office.
In 1989 he won competitions in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and
performed with the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra in Singapore in 1991. In
1994 he entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and toured Japan,
Taiwan, China and the USA performing with the Asian Youth Orchestra in
1995. After graduating from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts
he was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Boston Conservatory
of Music in the USA. While in Boston he served as principal viola of the
Boston Conservatory Orchestra and performed with the Berkshire Symphony
Orchestra. Mike was invited to perform at the Internationale Musiktage
Koblenz in Germany in 1997 where he also attended master classes with
Yuri Bashmet, Lynn Chang and the Borodin String Quartet. In 2007 he gained
his FTCL. He is a founding member of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong
Kong and has been the principal violist since 2006.
