Director's Notes

Dear Friends,

I do hope many of you were able to come and experience our special tango programme with Daniel Binell, Ferman and tango dancers Pilar Alvarez and Claudio Hoffmann held on 19 January. Comments from our audience members in the “Sounding Board” section of this newsletter reflect on an evening of passionate music and dance. The special lighting design created by Eva Yan is also to be commended. If you missed it all I am pleased to let you know that the programme can be enjoyed again on TVB Pearl and RTHK Radio 4 (FM97.6 – 98.9 MHz) in a simulcast to be aired on 6 March (Sat) at 2:35pm. For further details and links after the airing, please kindly check this website: www.rthk.org.hk

Here are a few photos of the concert event.

The orchestra was also privileged to record the same programme with Daniel Binelli and Polly Ferman for a CD production at Shaw Studios. Also in the same week Pilar Alvarez and Claudio Hoffmann gave a tango dance masterclass and Polly Ferman held a piano masterclass on music by Latin American composers. Most of the participants were students of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts who performed works by Ginastera and Piazzolla. I found the most impressive participant to be Chan Mei-yan (aged thirteen years) who gave a musical and technically impressive rendition of Piazzolla’s Suite for Piano, a piece she had been learning for her own interest. Here are some photos of the masterclass:

In the coming months we will be focusing on the concertos of Baroque masters such a Telemann, Vivaldi, Marcello, Handel and Boccherini, in two lovely and intimate concerts to be held at Union Church Hong Kong in February and March. The church itself offers beautiful acoustics and surroundings. These concerts, led on the modern violin by Baroque violinist Andrea Zanchetta, will feature many of the orchestra members as soloists. Tickets holders are also invited to join the orchestra members for refreshments in the adjoining garden area after the performance.
